Annie picked us up at the ferry landing because she lives too far away for us to have walked- off we went to Danger Reef-Squirrel Cafe -Art Camp, to stay over night at Annie's . The best holiday I have had since London. Annie and her husband built their house on 3.5 acres, along with a large shop/studio and a vintage cabin that her father owned. This the view of her front yard from the bedroom window. The large enough reef directly in view, easily watched all day every day due to activity of sea birds, eagles, nesting birds and seals.
Sunrise. During the night the moon rose and brightened up the island like daylight. This. is Annie's Danger Reef, all day entertainment!
Sat with coffee on her deck wrapped in a comfy blanket, watched as an eagle dined on eggs, somebody's children.
Gulls watched over the grown up seals on one side and the four baby seals on the other, giving moms a break, I suppose.
Annie's husband, Michael, died not long ago, the house has become hers entirely.
What a grand life she lives.
She and Stella fished together on Annie's commercial fishing vessel out of Sitka Alaska when they were young pups. Sitka is an island community of about 8,500 people, once the capital of Russian Pacific.
It can only be reached by sea or plane.
Anyway, that is where they met, and worked and formed a strong bond.
The house, now hers is pretty much an artists delight- production stations throughout. And that is where we learned , from "Annie's Art Camp". Collage and printing.
We walked her 3.5 acres finding small, interesting, botanicals that we wanted to print on our collages. I found a feather, likely eagle plumulaceous. I made a stand alone print of it , Used it a second time in a collage, which was too busy. Editing is important in collage. We arted all day, learning as we went,
Annie is a patient , effective and generous teacher, though I came away with inchoate results, it was rewarding and SO enjoyable. My attempts are-
The Feminine.
Earth marrying itself
More earthy bits- and Red bird, wearing big boots , in neon light .

What a wonderful art experience in a gorgeous natural setting! I'm sure you came away from it refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated!

DeleteA slice of the good life! The silence of the island was bliss- hearing only the water, the bird conversations and Air. Lovely.
You have the most interesting friends. Art camp looks fun.
ReplyDeleteyes and yes!
DeleteIs that Stella with the pup-stuffed shirt and gorgeous wavy hair? She's very pretty. I should let my hair dry loose afetr washing instead of tying it back, it would wave the same. I always learn something when you talk about art, today I looked up "inchoate" and now I know what it means. Your art is lovely as is Annie's home and views, the water, the reef, the birds and seals. What a life!
ReplyDeleteThe woman with the little dog in her shirt was a stranger, she is lovely! Her dog matched her hair. Annie's home is the best home I have ever been in- slept like a rock!
DeleteThis is just fantastic. What an incredible time, place, people. Beautiful work, so many wonderful things for inspiration. The ultimate art camp!
ReplyDeleteThis is just a glimpse! Annie has the energy of all the lights in America! She has versatile creativity non stop. What a git!
DeleteI am speechless. That house and that view. Annie on her fishing boat. The stove with its clock. Annie's bowls. Art materials everywhere, inside and out.
ReplyDeleteI believe I might have refused to leave.
Your sea collages are perfect.
I was thinking about when i go to London and come back to the states, what a let down it is to land here. That is how. I felt about
DeleteAnnie's place on the island- coming home is like landing in America...Not swell!
Living in a house with a shop/studio on an island with spectacular pristine views where wildlife and sea creatures are abundant sounds glorious to me. I am sorry Annie lost her husband recently. She seems to be doing okay and that's important.
ReplyDeleteCreating art with Annie and Stella and enjoying the island made a great get-away from the day-to-day we all experience. The magic of island life is real!

San Juan Island is very special, of all of the San Juan's I prefer it! It is a vibe, I must say- the moment we got off the ferry attitude adjusted, slower, calmer, in tune...Stupid drama vanishes. "President who?""what war?" Though petrol prices on the island are $7.00 a gallon. Significant! The grocery is full of local produce organic of course. DIY life!
DeleteThe San Juans are like nothing else. Without a doubt one of the most beautiful places on the West coast. Thanks for sharing. Annie has a lovely home.
ReplyDeleteThe beauty of the islands almost makes my brain hurt! It is surprisingly dry though. Crispy!
