Kim and I went to Emily's today to take care of Emmett. A splendid time to be sure. He is potty trained and talking, like a grown man. Delightful child. Beautiful boy.
We went for a walk to the coffee shop for juice and a bagel. On the way I couldn't stop taking photos and squealing, about the colors - so intense!
These are the legit colors, can your eyes even make sense out of them?
Not sure what this plant is- I google -lensed it but came up with too many false ideas. The berries are flat (?) the leaves are insane!
We walked, we talked, We compared first jobs stories and laughed so much - wished we had worn more substantial underpants. Kim's first job when she was maybe fourteen or so, was selling carnations at the side of the road. She remembers being picked up by some people , taken out to a desert road , left with a bucketful of carnations to sell . Stood for hours , no traffic , no people , just desert. . She abandoned the bucket ,called a friend to come and get her, got home before dark and her parents never knew. What you ,as a parent, do not know is probably a blessing. What you do know is worrying enough!
One of Emily's neighbors has a front garden absolutely brimming with Japanese lanterns.
They are wonderful are they not? Every stage of their lives is surreal. I have tried to grow them with zero success. It takes three years for them to actually become lantern pods. I am jealous of this woman's successful garden.
Their color is vibrant- more vermilion than orange. She also grew Honesty plants, and crimson love-lies bleeding. Most of which had been harvested and hung to dry.
Autumn was my mother's favorite season. Wyoming did not offer much as there were no trees or bright gardens. My parents decided that they wanted to drive to Maine to see REAL autumn. I was just starting my last year in high school, my brother was away at college. My mother had some elderly woman come in and check up on me , I was on my own. Always independent I didn't mind the empty house. I could eat as many hot dogs that I could find in the freezer. Cake and coffee before school. Pretty great!
Then something came up at school and I had to have a formal gown. I went to the dress shop in town -got a really great dress. My mother had credit with the shop so it was her dime. Dress,- check ,shoes, check- gloves check - all ready for the school assembly - "Outlaw Day", the crowing of the Outlaw queen. ( dear lord!)
My parents, bless them, high tailed back across country , got home in time to be in the audience at the assembly to see their homely, bratty child get a splendid, if iffy, tin crown and title of Queen of The Outlaws. Hilarious now , of course- back then it seemed special. Anyway , I got a pretty nice dress out of the deal . And every autumn I think of my mother and the drive across country to see color and busting their buns to get back to see that fabulous dress. It served me well through the rest of High school and three years of university. Then either it fell apart or I ate too many hot dogs , to much cake.
I just received photos from Keeka- climbimg into a massive cave in Borneo, she is loving that part of the world . The monkeys are naughty! They steal everything not tied down, aggressive and quick and bitey.
She wants to be "Crazy rich Asian".
Have a lovely autumn day, I hope you have a tree to look at!

I just want to be Crazy Rich. The photos are glorious, so much colour! Your dress was nice.
ReplyDeletewhat would you do differently if crazy rich?
DeleteI would buy a house instead of living in a government subsidised tiny one bedroom flat, I think you call it social housing in your country? And I could buy better shoes and help my family, donate to charities. I could cook everyday instead of worrying about the electricity cost of using the oven....I could travel too. I'm not so badly off really, I have a home at least and food and clothing.
DeleteAND the redheads to help you survive!
DeleteAw. That was pretty sweet of your parents. And how appropriate that you were crowned Queen of the Outlaws!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly are getting some beautiful and vibrant fall colors there! Fantastic. Both my plant ID app and my google lens say your plant there is some sort of viburnum. Who knows?
I'm jealous of Flora's pumpkin.
Flora's pumpkin just gets better and better- it may explode! The other pumpkins in that little patch have been harvested and lined up on the porch.
DeleteMy parents were the best sort of people ever to have lived. They just got stuck with a stinky daughter , but they loved me anyway! I don't know how!
Gorgeous tree there at the end. I'll just have to admire it since that never happens here.
ReplyDeleteOh those long gloves. I belonged to some sort of social dance club (misnomer because nobody danced at these 'dances'. Girls had to wait to be asked, boys too boy to ask. Anyway, they had a formal dance. My dress was yellow and white, hair 'done', and yes long white gloves almost to the armpit. We had to have a date for this event. The one guy I asked said no, he had a girlfriend, so I asked the son of my parents best friend, very cute and a year older. I made all the girls jealous. Is that your boyfriend? I just smiled smugly.
Loved the gloves, the dress and the shoes that were red velvet! Wow, what a time! In the middle of wyo dirt there wasn't much to look at so we dressed up a lot. All of my freinds looked spiffy, well groomed and good smelling!
DeleteGreat story about your "date".
The color in your area is outstanding. There is not much color on my property. The ground in the forest is a carpet of yellow as the pine trees (White Pine) are dropping their needles. In a few weeks the maple trees behind my house will turn red, orange and yellow.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I've tried growing the lanterns with no luck. Maybe I should try again. There has to be a secret to successful growing.
Your dress is amazing and you certainly were the loveliest Queen of the Outlaws.
Flora's pumpkin is looking great. The children must be looking forward to Halloween.
Keeka continues to have a wonderful adventure abroad.
Rich Asian? My new neighbor bought their home online from Beijing. Fascinating people and they want to bring their own karma to the home. The renovations have begun.
Susan
fancy buying a house online! That is one giant leap of faith , fingers crossed! Keeka is living the dream- no regrets, they say- she will have NONE!
DeleteYou are SO right about the color. Love at hat sumac photo and yes, seeing the mushrooms too. LIttle fairy houses. Don't tell me they're not! I used to grow those lanterns and for a reason I can no longer remember and kick myself for, I pulled them out. Maybe I should try again.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, you removed the most magnificent plant! So sorry!
DeleteThe colors are brilliant! You were definitely not homely, look at your gorgeousness in that dress! I think you’re still a beauty. What great parents you had!
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
Little wonder that my mother loved autumn so much- she herself was sparkly and loved color in the house. She was always trying to dress me in red. I said NO.
DeleteAccording to my plant identifier app, your mystery plant with the flat berries is a "wayfaring tree" (Viburnum lantana). Who knew?
ReplyDeleteThat IS a fabulous dress, particularly with those Breakfast-at-Tiffany's gloves!
Thank you for the name of that bush with the astonishing leaves and flat berries that look like beetles . Say it is Chinese- of course it must be to be so awesome.
DeleteNot sure what purpose those long gloves had other than keeping arms warm in a sleeveless dress. They buttoned with tiny pearl buttons at the wrist to keep them from looking like sacks, I guess.
Yeah, I can see you as "Queen of the Outlaws", no question. And then there are those gloves, I remember some like that from high school, were they really that long? I dunno, must be another hole in my memory. Great story tho, especially your folks racing back across country to see the crowning, I'm still chuckling. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteMy folks- I can't believe that they did that.. How sweet. I am not sure why they were so nice to me- i was a shite ,sassy daughter.
DeleteThe colors are gorgeous. You live in such a beautiful part of the world, when the sun is out. I envy Keeka her bravery and spirit of adventure. She's living large.
ReplyDeleteKeeka only uses the "NO" if some sleaze ball sidles up next to her. Well, she also might say "NO" to stupid if stupid is stupid... but generally she is a "yes, go for it" - and so she does. She is so well organized! She has so many skills in her little self, my god! she is a wonder child!
DeleteBrief moment of autumn gorgeousness right now. The sun is shinning and the bushes are on fire!
